Tampa SEO has been working with Joomla since it was first launched as a content management system in 2005. One of our clients even provides free Joomla Hosting to their subscribers, and they’ve been ranked number one on Google for over two years.
A ton of our search engine optimization clients are Joomla fans as well, and we are constantly working on the on-page search engine optimization of Joomla. Joomla has a ton of problems when it comes to SEO – and most of the challenge of Joomla SEO is actually duplicate content.
Joomla is a very powerful CMS, and so it provides a ton of options for the users. It’s significantly more challenging to SEO than WordPress SEO, but is still being used by developers across the world.
Joomla SEO Tip #1: Watch out for duplicate content with Joomla – it’s a real SEO killer.
Joomla is an open source content management system, which means it has a ton of very powerful options that (mostly) don’t require programming. Along with the powerful CMS that Joomla offers, it also offers a ton of SEO problems.
Usually, Joomla causes duplicate content in the following ways:
- Data segmentation
- URL structure
- Print, PDF, email icons
Each of these areas need to be addressed individually, but some of them can be solved by adding a canonical tag to the top of each PHP page. Look for SEO modules that address duplicate content issues on Joomla.
To measure your duplicate content issues, you can either use a tool like SEOmoz, or you can manually search for pages that have been indexed on Google more than one time. The second option is extremely tedious if you have a lot of content on your website.

Joomla SEO Tip #2: Make sure you don’t ignore your title and meta tags.
Joomla is not as search engine optimization friendly as WordPress, but it does allow for some pretty powerful applications. You can use Joomla for everything from a social media website to a project management system – or just a personal blog.
However, it’s not naturally SEO friendly. Editing your title and meta tags can be a real challenge. Tampa SEO always installs one or two SEO modules into Joomla to allow us to easily manage our title and meta tags – which is absolutely something you need to do as well.
Tampa SEO has friends in the SEO industry who recommend this website – Joomla Template Secrets. We have heard from a lot of our clients that you can download up to 3500 Joomla templates – which is awesome for SEO.
Joomla SEO Tip #3: Internal linking is super important.
Most of our SEO clients in Tampa always forget to use really great internal linking structures. They’ll write a really great piece of content, log into Joomla, and add a new article, but they almost always forget to maximize their internal linking capabilities.
If you are writing a new article, make sure you’re tying in keywords and keyword phrases to other pages of your website. This helps the search engines understand what those pages are, and to spider and index those pages easily.
Joomla SEO Tip #4: Joomla isn’t born with sitemaps – you need to create them.
Having a sitemap at www.yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml isn’t good enough anymore. You also need to submit your sitemap to Google and Bing. Not only that, but you should also start using image sitemaps & video sitemaps to compliment your regular XML sitemap.
Sitemaps are pretty easy to create, but also remember that you need to make sure your Joomla sitemap is formatted to Google and Bing’s standards. Just do a quick search for the term, “Joomla Sitemap Module” and you should be able to find a great module for your website.
Joomla SEO Tip #5: Alt tags and image tag optimization can go a long way for your Joomla website, and as always, watch your speed!
Tampa SEO sees Tampa businesses that constantly undervalue the opportunity to gain traffic from image search. By taking a few steps to optimize your images, you could start receiving a ton of traffic for your Joomla website.
Here are a few tips for SEO optimizing the images on your website:
- Use keywords in the image name
- Ad “alt” attributes to the image
- Caption the image using keywords
- Make sure the image matches the content
Speed can be a large problem with Joomla as well. Always use a CDN (content delivery network) and make sure you’re not lagging behind on your site speed. Cache your static text, compress your images, combine your JSS and CSS, and take other steps necessary for faster load times.
By following these 5 tips and tricks, you can absolutely see an increase in your organic search engine optimization rankings. However, only about 30% of all SEO comes from on-page website factors!
