Should I Use Keywords In My Domain/URL?

Keyword usage in your domain can be a critical thing when optimizing a website. Having said this we took a look at SEOMOz’s 2011 Search Engine Ranking Factors. Here is a fresh look at domain level keyword usage by your friends here at Tampa SEO.

SEOMoz has done a study about the keyword usage in your domain name as it relates to SEO. This SEO study found that in June of 2010 the correlation between using your exact match keyword in your domain name (for example: and your websites ranking has a 0.38. This means that the SEO study found that using your exact keywords in your domain name has a very high effect on SEO results. Around March of 2011, we have seen one of the biggest drops which means that Google is no longer valuing domains with SEO keywords in them as highly as they were in June 2010.

As you can see in the SEO graph that the experts here at Tampa SEO created using SEOmoz’s data, you can see below that using the keyword directly in the domain name (example, the vs. having it as the sub-domain) has a higher relationship to your SEO rankings.

Exact Keyword Matching Has a High Affect On Your SEO Rankings

It’s a win-win!  If at all possible, you want to have your keyword in your domain name, as the search engines look at that and it will increase the ranking a bit.
