You’d be hard pressed to find a Tampa business which doesn’t know the social networking website Facebook.  The first thing to note is that Facebook exists to allow you to connect socially with people who are already in your life. Unlike MySpace or some other social networking websites, Facebook is a great way to connect with people you already know, have met, or are familiar with in some way.

Tampa SEO has seen some great examples of social media marketing with Facebook, and we’ve also seen some terrible examples.  We’ll be creating a follow up blog about the best and worst social media marketing examples on Facebook.

Pros of Facebook Marketing:

  1. It’s easy to get your marketing message out with Facebook and receive customer interaction & feedback – good or bad.
  2. Using “Pages,” companies can now interact as if they were a person – interacting with others in the community.

Cons of Facebook Marketing:

  1. Facebook can drive a ton of traffic, although the traffic may come in spurts rather than a steady flow.
  2. Links from Facebook are generally nofollow links, however, Google and Bing have both announced that they use signals from Facebook.  Though still relevant, you might not have the same search engine optimization benefits that you would on another social media website.

A real time network that provides you instant access to the most up to date information about…anything.

Tampa SEO speaks with small businesses in Tampa quite often about Twitter – and the benefits of social media marketing with Twitter.  Most businesses still don’t “get it.” However, Twitter is a really great way to stay connected to your customers, you competition, or the latest industry happenings.

Pros of Twitter Marketing:

  1. Twitter is a great outbound messaging tool.  You can reach a huge amount of people in a tiny amount of time.
  2. Twitter is a very good inbound communication tool – you can monitor and follow conversations very easily.
  3. Getting re-Tweets and interactions about your business, your brand, or your topic, can provide more value for your brand than any other social networking website.

Cons of Twitter Marketing:

  1. There is a ton of spam and scammers running amok all over Twitter.  This has lead to a reduction in direct traffic that will be coming from Twitter.
  2. Although Twitter links are also “nofollow” links, Bing and Google has both announced that they use Twitter links as a ranking factor for organic search engine optimization.  Currently, the SEO value is not quantified.

Pros and Cons of Social Media Marketing #3: LinkedIn

A social networking website for businesses and professionals.

LinkedIn allows you to connect with present, past, and future colleagues and businesses that you may have interacted with in the past.  Like Facebook, LinkedIn is generally geared towards finding people you already know, however it has also been used as a sales tool in the past as well.

Pros of LinkedIn Marketing:

  1. LinkedIn is a good tool for personal branding and showing the professional level of your Tampa business.
  2. You can encourage your team to fill out complete profiles and connect via your Tampa business, which will give your team a great look and feel to potential clients.
  3. LinkedIn has a very high page rank and usually shows up on the first page of the SERPs for your employee’s names as well as your branded keywords.

Cons of LinkedIn Marketing:

  1. Traffic & revenue from LinkedIn will be limited.  There won’t be a ton of traffic coming from LinkedIn, however, it can be used as a strong reputation builder and sales support for your Tampa business.
  2. LinkedIn is not a good way to communicate with your customers.

Although Digg went through a rough time in 2010, 2011 looks like its going to rebound – especially for social media marketing.  Digg is a great way to promote content that you’ve written, to gain incoming links, and to receive lots of traffic – especially if your content gets promoted on the front page of Digg.

Pros of Marketing with Digg:

  1. Brands and businesses have the ability to gain a ton of views & traffic on Digg.
  2. Like Twitter, Digg is a venue of “content discovery,” which posts the most interesting articles to the front page of its website.
  3. Digg is the most consistent traffic generator and can drive a ton of traffic to your website.
  4. Even if your story doesn’t become very popular, your Digg post will still have SEO value.
  5. This is the best website in terms of getting blogger’s attention from your content.  This will help building links & is a natural source of link bait.

Cons of Marketing with Digg:

  1. The only con of marketing with Digg is this – there is little to no customer interaction. However, the pros far outweigh the cons, and Digg is an essential form of marketing for every Tampa business.  There’s no excuse not to engage in social media marketing with Digg!

Pros and Cons of Social Media Marketing #6: Tumblr

Similar to Digg, Tumblr is a place to share anything.

Here at Tampa SEO, we sincerely believe in Tumblr, and the exponential growth of this soon-to-be social media giant.  Tumblr is quickly growing and it looks like it will eventually rival the size of Twitter.

Pros of Marketing with Tumblr:

  1. With the ability for users to ask questions, and other users to answer those same questions, you have a unique opportunity for customer engagement.
  2. Tumblr’s simple interface makes it super easy to share content.
  3. Tumblr is a great branding tool.
  4. The GenY generation is migrating to Tumblr by the truck load – if that demographic is important, chase them down!
  5. Tumblr has a blogging platform integrated, which means that it has a high potential for gaining incoming links.
  6. Tumblr sites organically rank pretty high in the SERPS.

Cons of Marketing with Tumblr:

  1. There’s no real potential to bring the traffic generated back to your website.
  2. Only images can drive traffic to your website.
